THE EFFECT OF USING START WITH SIMPLE STORIES (SSS) TECHNIQUE TOWARDS STUDENTS’ READING SKILLAT EIGHTH GRADE STUDENTS OFJUNIORHIGH SCHOOL (An Experimental Studyon Students ofSMPN 01Dukuhturi of Tegal Regency in theAcademicYear of2014/2015)

The objective of this research was to find out the positive effect of using Start with Simple Stories Technique toward students’ reading skill to the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 1 Dukuhturi in the academic year of 2014/2015.
The population of this research was the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri1 Dukuhturi. The total number of the population was 279 students. The writer used cluster random sampling technique to choose the sample of the research, consisting of 62 students. The samples were divided into two groups. The first group was called experimental group consisted 32 students. They are students who were taught by applying Start with Simple Stories Technique. The second group was called control group. It consisted of 30 students who were not taught by applying Start with Simple Stories Technique.
The writer used reading test as the instrument of the research. The type of the test was multiple choices test which consisted of 25 items with four options each. The validity and reliability of the instrument were checked by testing the instrument to 30 students having the same competence with the sample of the research.
Description data of this research was tested by using t-test. It showed that t-test measurement of experimental group was obtained 5.937 (t-value) and control group 5.723. Meanwhile, from the table of significance 5% with df 62 and 58, it was shown by the result of t-table 1.671 and 1.673. It means that t-value of experimental group and control group was higher from t-table (5.937>1.671 and 5.723> 1.673). It was meant that the null hypothesis (H0) was rejected and the hypothesis of the research (H1) was accepted.
The conclusion of this research was that Start with Simple Stories Technique gave positive effect toward the reading skill of the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 1 Dukuhturi in the academic year of 2014/2015. Therefore, English teacher can apply the Start with Simple Stories Technique for teaching in order to improve students’ reading skill.
