THE EFFECT OF USING ENGLISH CARTOON MOVIES TOWARD STUDENTS’ VOCABULARY ACHIEVEMENT (An Experimental Study in the first Grade Students of State SMP N 1 Warureja in Academic Year 2013/2014)

The objectives of the study is to find out the effect of using English cartoon movies toward students’ vocabulary achievement. The purpose of this research is to know whether there is positive effect of using English cartoon movies as a teaching media toward students’ vocabulary achievement of the seventh grade students of SMP N 1 Warureja – Tegal in the academic year 2013/2014.
The population of the study is the seventh grade students of SMP N 1 Warureja in academic year 2013/2014 with total students of class VII is 270, which consist of 9 classes. The writer used two group design as research methodology and also the writer used cluster random sampling technique to choose the sample of the research. The sample consist of two groups, the first group was experimental group and the second group was control group. The experimental group was taught by using English cartoon movies as a teaching media then the control group was taught without using English cartoon movies. Each group consisted of 30 students. The test that the writer used is an objective test type with multiple choices type. The test contains thirty items and the time allocation to do the test is fourty minutes.
The result of the research shows the mean score of experiment class ( the students taugt by using English cartoon movies) is 74,4 and the mean score of control class (the students are taught without using English cartoon movies) is 68,5 there is difference in score between students taught using cartoon movies and those taught without English cartoon movies. It is showed by the mean of experiment class is higher than control class (74,4 > 68,5). On the other hand, the test of hypothesis using t-test formula shows the value of t-test is higher than the value of t-table. The value of t-test is 4,727 with the level significance 5%, while the value of t-table on a = 5% is 2,000 (4,727 > 2,000). The hypothesis is accepted.
Based on the results above the conclusion of this study, is there is significant difference of vocabulary achievement between the students taught by using english cartoon movies and students taught without using english cartoon movies. In addition, learning by using english cartoon movies as a teaching media gives positive effect to the English vocabulary achievement of the first grade students of SMP N 1 Warureja in the academic year of 2013/2014.
