THE EFFECT OF THE IMPLEMENTATION OF PROP BOX METHOD TOWARDS THE STUDENTS’ SPEAKING ACHIEVEMENT (An Experimental Study of Eighth Grade Students of SMP N 10 Tegal in Academic Year 2013/2014)
Key words: prop box method, students’ speaking achievement.
The purpose of the research is to find out whether using prop box method gives positive effect toward student’s speaking achievement. The population of this research is the eighth grade students of SMP N 10 Tegal in the academic year of 2013/2014. The writer uses cluster random sampling to take 60 students as sample. They are divided into two groups; experimental group (30 students) and control group (30 students).
Based on the background of the problem and logical framework, the hypothesis of this research is “Prop Box Method gives positive effect in the teaching of speaking to the eighth grade students of SMP N 10 Tegal in academic year of 2013/2014”.
Conversation tests are used by the writer to check the effectiveness of using prop box method in the teaching of speaking to the eighth grade students of SMP N 10 Tegal. The test has been held in the end of the meeting. The conversation test is recorded for the research analysis. In the spoken assessment, there are 5 elements to score the speaking ability; they are grammar, pronunciation, vocabulary, comprehension, and fluency. The scoring are appropriated for beginner level.
The analysis of this research is done by t-test. It shows that the t-test result is 2.750 in the significant level of 5% with degree of freedom 58 and the ttable is 1.671. The result, t0 is higher than ttable (t1) (2.750>1.671). It means that the hypothesis of the research is accepted.
From the result of data analysis, the writer can take conclusion that there is a positive effect of using prop box method in the teaching of speaking for eighth grade students of SMP N 10 Tegal in the academic year of 2013/2014.
