THE EFFECT OF USING STORY BOXES ON STUDENTS’ ABILITY IN WRITING PROCEDURE TEXT (An Experimental Research on the Eighth Grade Student of SMP N 1 Pemalang in the Academic Year of 2013/2014)

The objectives of this research are to know the implementation of Story Boxes in writing procedure text of the eighth grade students of State Junior High School 1 Pemalang, and to find out whether or not the use of story boxes in teaching writing gives positive effect towards the students’ ability in writing procedure text in the eighth grade at SMP N 1 Pemalang.
This research is experimental research. The population of this research is the eighth grade students of SMP N 1 Pemalang in the Academic Year of 2013/2014 that consists of 258 students. The writer takes 60 students as the sample of the research. This research is done by classifying sample into two groups. Each group consists of 30 students. The sample is taken by using random sampling technique and they are divided into two groups, the first group is experimental group that consists of students who are taught by using story boxes and the second group is control group that consists of students who are taught without using story boxes. In this research, the writer uses writing test as the test research instrument.
Based on the result of the research, the writer uses t-test to test the difference of the means of the two groups. The result is that t-test is 3,071 with the degree of freedom (df) is 58, the level significance is 5% (α) and the t-table is 2,000. It means that the t-test is higher than t-table (3,071>2,000).
From the result of data analysis, the writer can conclude that using story boxes media gives positive effect towards students’ ability in writing procedure text of the eighth grade of State Junior High School 1 Pemalang in the Academic Year of 2013/2014.
Based on the findings, the writer recommends some suggestions. First, the teacher should find interesting method or technique which is suitable to the material and the goal of the learning. Second, using story boxes media is easy to apply and it can be used to increase the student’ writing ability in learning English.
