This research is purposed to describe the implementation of peer tutoring technique in teaching English speaking and its effect towards the students’ speaking achievement. Based on the review of related literature, the hypothesis of this research is as follows “The Students that taught by using Peer Tutoring Technique get better score than the students that taught without using Peer Tutoring technique”. The researcher uses quantitative research as the approach, experimental research as the type, and two group as the design of the research. To check the effect of this technique on student’s speaking achievement, the researcher applies a tests. The test is given for both groups. The result of the test will be compared to find out whether or not there are differences between the students who are taught by using peer tutoring technique and the student who are not taught by using peer tutoring technique and to find out whether or not there is positive effect of peer tutoring technique on student’s speaking achievement.
The population of this research is the eighth grades students of SMPN 1 Lebaksiu which consists of 311 students. The researcher uses cluster random sampling technique to choose the sample of the research. The sample of this research is 60 students. There are 30 students of experimental group and 30 students of control group. Based on the data analysis, the t-test is 10,29 with the degree of freedom 58 on the significant level of 5% t-table is 1,672. The computation shows that t-test is higher than t-table (10,29> 1,672). It means that the hypothesis of the research is accepted.
The conclusion of the research is that the use of Peer Tutoring Technique gives positive effect in the teaching of speaking for eighth grade students of Junior High School at SMP N 1 Lebaksiu in the academic year of 2014/2015. By using peer tutoring technique, it is expected that the students are able to start to speak up freely without worry to make mistake.
