THE EFFECT OF USING ENGLISH NEWSPAPERS ON STUDENTS’ READING ACHIEVEMENT (An Experimental Research to the Eleventh Graders of SMA Negeri 1 Balapulang in the Academic Year of 2014/2015)

Reading is one of important factors on students’ success in learning English, because reading is a skill that relates with another skill. From reading, students can improve their pronunciation, vocabularies, grammar and their knowledge. But it is not easy to achieve those goals by reading only so it needs some ways to solve it. One of them is by using English newspapers in teaching.
The research question formulated as follows: (1) How is the implementation of teaching reading using English newspapers to the students, (2) Is the implementation of teaching reading using English newspapers effective to the students, (3) How effective is the implementation of teaching reading using English newspapers to the students, (4) Is there any significant difference in reading achievement between students who are taught by using English newspapers and those who are not.
This is experimental research with two groups design. The writer uses cluster random sampling technique to choose sample of the research. Population of this research is the eleventh graders of SMAN 1 Balapulang in the academic year of 2014/2015. The number of population is 270 students. The sample is 60 students. Each group consists of 30 students. The writer gives pretest and posttest to collect the data. The instrument of this research is reading test. The test contains of 50 items of multiple choice with five alternative answers a, b, c, d and e. Data analysis are divided into two; Pre analysis testing and hypothesis testing.
The result shows that calculating t-test by using SPSS 16, it is found that the gain signification which drop below 0.05. The result is 0.000 with the correlation 0.641. It means that signification is lower than 0.05 (0.000<0.05). It can be concluded that the research hypothesis (H1) is accepted and the correlation which is categorized strong. The writer also calculates independent sample t-test and the result is 0.000. It means that signification is lower than (0.000<0.05). It can be concluded that the research hypothesis (H3) is accepted. The conclusion of this research states that the implementation of teaching reading using English newspapers is effective to the Eleventh graders of SMAN 1 Balapulang in the academic year of 2014/2015, the implementation is categorized strong effective, and there is significant differences in reading achievement between the students who are taught by using English newspapers and the students who are not.
