THE EFFECT OF USING MAKING CONNECTIONS STRATEGY ON THE READING ACHIEVEMENT OF TENTH GRADE STUDENTS OF SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL (An Experimental Study at State Senior High School 4 Tegal in the Academic Year of 2014/2015)
Key Words : Making Connections Strategy, Reading Achievement
Most of Indonesian does not like to read something. Especially for the students. Students in Indonesia can not understand an English text since they encountered a new or uncommon word that hard to find the equal meaning in Indonesia.
Making Connections Strategy is strategy to help the readers understanding the whole text by making connections between text to self, text to text, and text to world.
The objective of this research is to find out the different result of students’ reading achievement of tenth grade students at State Senior High School 4 Tegal who are taught by using making connections strategy (experimental group) and students who are not taught by using making connections strategy (control group).
The population of this research is the tenth grade students of State Senior High School 4 Tegal. The total number of population is 290 students. In this research, the writer uses cluster random sampling technique to take sample. The writer takes two classes from population to be used as the samples of this research at random. Each class consists of 30 students. The first group consists of students who are taught by making connections strategy and the second group who are not taught by using Making Connections Strategy.
The research instrument is reading test. the form of the test is multiple choices and the material of the test is recount text. The test consist of 40 numbers, eight short recount text following by five questions and five possible answers (A, B, C, D or E) for each questions. The test is given to both groups, experimental group and control group. Time allocation for the test is 60 minutes.
The data is analyzed by using t-test to know whether the hypothesis is accepted or not. The data result shows that t0 is higher than t-table (2,763 > 1,672) at significant level of 5% (0,05) and degree of freedom (df) is 58. Since the t0 is higher than t-table, the alternative hypothesis (H1) is accepted. Also, it means that there is significant difference between experimental group and control group. It can be concluded that using making connections strategy in learning reading gives positive effect on students’ reading achievement of tenth grade students of State Senior High School 4 Tegal.
Based on the research result, the writer suggests to use Making Connections Strategy to help the students achieving better result on reading achievement.
