THE IMPLEMENTATION OF SKETCH TO STRETCH STRATEGY IN TEACHING READING COMPREHENSION (An Experimental Research to the Eighth Graders of SMP Negeri 2 Pemalang in the Academic Year of 2014/2015)

There are many reason why the writer chooses this research. Practically, students’ can not learn without read, but most of the students have some difficult in reading. Most of students lack of vocabulary, feel difficult to mention words, and couldn’t catch the idea from the passage. Therefore, the writer need to should apply appropriate strategy to teaching reading, namely Sketch to Stretch strategy.
There are four research problems, (1) How is the implementation of Sketch to Stretch Strategy in teaching reading comprehension. (2) Is the implementation of Sketch to Stretch Strategy effective in teaching reading comprehension. (3) How effective is the implemention of sketch to stretch strategy in teaching reading comprehension in teaching reading comprehension. (4) Is there any significant difference in reading achievement between the students who are taught using Sketch to Stretch strategy and the students who aren’t taught using Sketch to Stretch strategy.
In the research methodology, the research is quantitative, experimental research, and two group design. First group is as experiment class that applied by using Sketch to Stretch Strategy in Class VIII I and second group is as control class that applied by using non Sketch to Stretch strategy in Class VIII G. To measure the validity and reliability of the instruments, the writer tries-out the instrument. Then, the research used pre-test and post test to collect the data. The analysed of the research by using SPSS programme. T-test is higher than t-table (20.83 > 2.04) and P value (0.00) < α (0,05) . It means the Sketch to stretch strategy is effective in teaching reading comprehension. By using paired sample correlation, it shows the correlation value is 0.53. It means that the effective of the implementation of Sketch to stretch strategy in teaching reading comprehension is categorized strong. Based on the calculation of means in two unrelated groups t-test (8.06) > t-table and P value (0.00) < α (0.05). There are significant difference between students who are taught using sketch to stretch strategy and students who are not taught using sketch to stretch strategy.
The finding showed that the use of sketch to stretch strategy is effective and there is significant difference in teaching reading comprehension to the eighth graders of SMP Negeri 2 Pemalang in the Academic Year of 2014/2015.
