THE EFFECTIVENESS OF USING TALKING STICK TOWARD STUDENTS’ READING ACHIEVEMENT (An Experimental Study of The Tenth Grade Students of MAN 1 Brebes in Academic Year of 2014/2015)

Reading is one of important skill that students must master. Students must be able to master English language and they need a competence in understanding the English text. In learning English as foreign language, most Indonesian students difficult in reading comprehension. Some students have difficulties because they have not truly mastered reading fluently. When students read an English text, they will get dizzy, they cannot understand the meaning of words in a text because they less of vocabularies. Sometimes the students also can not focus. Those problems perhaps happen since some English teachers still use traditional or conventional learning model to teach reading.
The objectives of the research are to describe the implementation of talking stick toward students’ reading achievement at tenth grade students senior high school of MAN 1 Brebes in academic year 2014/2015. The problem formulation in this research is “Is there a positive effect of using talking stick toward students’ reading achievement?”
The population of this research is the tenth grade students of MAN 1 Brebes in academic year 2014/2015. The population consists of 214 students. By using cluster random sampling technique, the writer takes sample from the population and the sample is 50 students from X IIK and X MIA2. This research is two-group design. Data collecting technique in this research is reading test. The test is multiple choice type.
The data shows that t-table at 5% level of significance is is 1.645. While t0 is 2.52. So, t0 is higher than t-table (2.52 > 1.645). According to the calculation, null hypothesis is rejected, and the alternative hypothesis is accepted. It means there is a positive effect on the students’ reading achievement by the implementation of talking stick.
Based on the research, it is suggested that the teacher has to manage the time and the class well because talking stick model takes much time. The teacher also has to be concerned when making group learning. The teacher tries to make the condition of learning process is more fun for the students by using talking stick.
