THE EFFECT OF APPLYING CARD – SORT METHOD ( CSM) TOWARDS VOCABULARY ACHIEVEMENT OF THE FIFTH GRADE STUDENTS OF ELEMENTARY SCHOOL (An Experimental Research in State Elementary Schoolat Jatinegara Districs – Tegal Regency in the Academic Year of 2014 – 2015)

The objective of this research is to know whether there is any positive effect of applying Card – Sort Method towards vocabulary achievement of the fifth grade students of elementary school in State Elementary School at Jatinegara Districs- Tegal regency in the academic year of 2014 – 2015.
The population of the research is the fifth grade students of State Elementary School at Jatinegara Districs. To collect the data, the writer took 60 students of the population as the sample. In this research the writer clustered the schools to be used as experimental group and as control group. From the randomization of the result obtained 2 State Elementary School from State Elementary School Gantungan 01 as experimental group and State Elementary School Gantungan 02 as control group. From the research the writer used two group design. First group consisted of 30 students who are taught by using card–sort method and second group consisted of 30 students who are taught without using Card–Sort Method and the writer used cluster random sampling technique to choose the sample that is divided into two groups. The instrument of this research is multiple choice test which consists of 40 items and research used each items has four options.
Data analysis of this research is tested by using t-test. Based on the result of the data analysis, t-ratio is 3,723 with the degree of freedom (df) = (n1+n2) – 2 = (30+30) – 2 = 58. On the level significance 5%, it is found that t-table is 2,002. It means that t-ratio is higher than t-table (3,723 > 2,002). It can be concluded that hypothesis of the research is accepted. Thus, the using card-sort gives positive effect on students’ vocabulary achievement of the fifth grade students of State Elementary School at Jatinegara Districs – Tegal Regency in Academic Year 2014 – 2015. Based on the findings above the writer suggest that the teachers should use a new method or technique in learning English, for example by using Card-Sort Method, itcan make the students feel enjoyable and interested in learning process especially in learning vocabulary. The teachers are advised to use Card-Sort Method in English teaching and learning process to make real effective and fun to learn vocabulary especially for the students of Elementary School.
