THE EFFECT OF USING TRANSFORMATION DRILL IN TEACHING GRAMMAR TO JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS (An Experimental Research to the Eighth Grade Students of SMP Negeri 1 Pemalang in the Academic Year 2014/2015)

Grammar is structure of English language which consists of the way to arrange and patterned to make the sentences.Without grammar, words hang together without any real meaning. In learning English, of course, we do the errors. Those errors are caused by some factors such as difficulty in learning grammar or pronunciation and so on. Those errors are considered normal because we usually use our native language. And we usually make sentence with grammatical rule of our native language.
The problems of this research are 1. How is the implementation of Transformation Drill in teaching grammar to Junior High School Students? 2. Is the implementation of Transformation Drill effective in teaching grammar to the Junior High School Students? 3.How effective is the implementation of Transformation Drill in teaching grammar to Junior High School Students? 4. Is there any significant differences grammar achievement between the students who are taught using Transformation Drill and those are not?
The researcher uses quantitative research as the approach, experimental research as the type, and two group design of the research. The population of this research is 260 students of the eighth grade of junior high school students in SMP N 1 Pemalang. The sample is taken that using Cluster Random Sampling to determine the experimental and control group. The sample is 60 students; 30 students of 8 F who were taught by using Transformation Drill (experimental group) and 30 students of 8 G who were not taught by using transformation Drill (control group). In collecting the data, the instrument which is used is a test containing multiple choice form of grammar test consists of 40 questions.The validity and reliability of the instrument are tested by using statistical analysis of Correlation Product Moment. The data of this research is tested by using independent sample test.
The data shows that t-ratio is 3.683 whereas t-table with degree of freedom (58) and on the level significance 5%, the value of t-table is 2.002 (3.683 > 2.002). It means that the objectives of the research are achieved. It could be concluded that the effect using of Transformation Drill is effective in teaching grammar to the eighth grade students and there is significance difference on both of sample. The writer suggests that the English teacher should be able to apply the Transformation Drill, so the students are not bored and interested in teaching grammar. However, it can be increase grammar comprehension of the students.
