THE EFFECT OF USING VOCABULARY SELF-COLLECTION STRATEGY (VSS)TOWARD READING ACHIEVEMENT OF THE EIGHTH GRADE STUDENTS OF JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL An Experimental Study on State Junior High School 1 Taman Pemalang in the Academic Year of 2014/2015

This research examines the effect of using Vocabulary Self-collection strategy toward reading achievement of the eighth grade students of junior high school. The objective of this research is to find out whether or not the using of Vocabulary Self-collection strategy give a possitive effect on students’ reading achievement. Vocabulary Self-collection Strategy is an instructional strategy that make students are engaged actively in learning new words and share to members of the class.
Based on the review of related theories, the research hypothesis is proposed as follows : there is a positive effect of using Vocabulary Self-collection Strategy toward reading achievementof the eighth grade students of State Junior High School 1 Taman Pemalang in academic year of 2014/2015.
This research is an experimental research. In conducting the research, the writer uses two groups design. Population of this research isstudents of the eighth grade of State Junior High School 1 Taman Pemalang which is totally 283 students. The cluster random sampling technique is used to take the sample. The sample consists of 60 students that are divided into two groups. Experimental group who are taught by using Vocabulary Self-collectionStrategyand control group who are taught by using Questioning Strategy. The both samples are given a reading test as the instrument of the research which consists of 30 items in the multiple choice form.
To analyze the data, the writer uses t-test formula to know the difference of reading achievement of the two groups. Based on the result of data analysis, the score of t-table at 5% level of significances is 1,645. While t-ratio is 4,833. So, t-ratio is higher than t-table (4,833>1,645). According to this calculation, the research hypothesis of this research is accepted. It means that there is significant difference between reading achievement of students who are taught by using Vocabulary Self-collection Strategy and the students who are taught by using Questioning Strategy.
The conclusion of this research is Vocabulary Self-collection Strategy gives a positive effect toward reading achievement of the eighth grade students of State Junior High School 1 Taman Pemalang in the academic year of 2014/2015.
