THE EFFECT OF USING RECIPROCAL TEACHING STRATEGY TOWARD THE READING ACHIEVEMENT OF THE EIGHT GRADE STUDENTS OF JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL (An Experimental Study in the SMP N 1 Dukuhturi Kab. Tegal in the Academic Year 2013/2014)

The objective of this research is to find out the positive effect of using Reciprocal Teaching Strategy toward students’ reading achievement of the eight grade students of SMP Negeri 1 Dukuhturi in academic year of 2013/2014.
The population of this research is the eight grade students of SMP Negeri 1 Dukuhturi. The total of the population is 270 students. The writer uses cluster random sampling technique to choose the sample of the research, consisted of 60 students. The sample is divided into two groups and each group consisted of 30 students. The first group is called experimental group. It consisted of the students who are taught by applying Reciprocal Teaching Strategy. The second group is called control group. It consists of the students who are not taught by applying Reciprocal Teaching Strategy.
The writer uses reading test as the instrument of the research. The type of the test is multiple choices test which consisted of 30 items with four options. The validity and reliability of the instrument are checked by testing the instrument to 30 students who have the same competence with the sample of the research.
The data of this research is test by using t-test. It shows that t-test result is 4,612. The t-table is 1,671 with the degree of freedom (df) 58 on the level significant of 5%. It is said that t-test is higher than t-table (4,612>1,671). It is meant that the null hypothesis (H0) is rejected and the hypothesis of the research (H1) is accepted.
The conclusion of this research is the use of Reciprocal Teaching Strategy gave positive effect toward students’ reading achievement of the eight grade students of SMP Negeri 1 Dukuhturi in academic year of 2013/2014. So, English teacher can apply the Reciprocal Teaching Strategy in learning English, especially in Teaching reading in order to improve students’ reading achievement.
