THE EFFECT OF USING STORY MAPPING TECHNIQUE ON STUDENTS’ SKILL IN WRITING NARRATIVE TEXT (An Experimental Research on the Eighth Grade Students of Islamic Junior High School Mambaul Ulum Tegal in Academic Year of 2015/2016)

The aim of the research is to find out the effect of using Story Mapping Technique on students’ skill in writing narrative text on the eighth grade students of Islamic Junior High School Mambaul Ulum Tegal in Academic Year of 2015/2016.
Based on the theory of thinking, the research hypothesis is proposed as follows: there is a positive effect of using story mapping technique on students’ skill in writing narrative text on the eighth grade students of Islamic Junior High School Mambaul Ulum Tegal in Academic Year of 2015/2016.
This research uses quantitative approach in the type of experimental research. The writer uses two classes (VIII A and VIII B) which consist of 24 students for each class as the sample who are selected by using cluster random sampling technique. In designing study, the writer uses Two-Group Design which consists of two classes that have same level, those are class VIII A as experiment group who are taught by using Story Mapping Technique and class VIII B as control group who are not taught by using Story Mapping Technique.
The technique for collecting data is written test as the instrument of the research. The time allocation of the test is 80 minutes. To analyze the data, the writer uses t-test formula to know the difference of writing skill of the two groups. Based on the result of the data analysis t-test is 3,9868, whereas t-table 1,645 at the significant level of 5% and degree of freedom (df) is 46. So, t-test is higher than t-table (3,9868>1,645). Because the result of t-test is higher than t-table, thus the zero hypothesis (H_0 ) is refused and the alternative hypothesis (H_1 ) is accepted. It means that there is significant difference on writing skill between the students who are taught by using Story Mapping Technique and those who are not taught by using Story Mapping Technique.
The conclusion of this research shows that using Story Mapping Technique has a positive effect on students’ skill in writing narrative text on the eighth grade students of Islamic Junior High School Mambaul Ulum Tegal in academic year of 2015/2016.Thus, it also can be concluded that the teacher could use story mapping technique to motivate and improve the students’ writing skill.
