The population of this research is all of the seventh grade students in the first semester of SMP Negeri 2 Dukuhturi in the academic year of 2015/2016. The total numbers of the students is 237. The writer used reading test as the instrument of the research. The type of the test is multiple choice tests with four options. To know the validity of the instrument, the writer had tried out the instrument by giving a test to 30 students having the same level competence.
T-test is used to know the difference result of the two groups. The result of calculation analysis shows that t-test = 4,382, and then this number is consulted with the significance level 5%. The result of t-table = 1,702. It means that the result of t-test is higher than t-table. The hypothesis of this research is accepted.
The conclusion of this research shows that the use of directed reading thinking activity strategy has positive effect towards reading achievement to the seventh grade students of SMP Negeri 2 Dukuhturi in the academic year of 2015/2016.
English teachers are suggested to apply DRTA strategy in the pre,- during,- and post,- reading activities in teaching reading. They should also motivate their students to work more creatively.
