THE EFFECT OF USING SQ3R (Survey, Question, Read, Recite, Review) STRATEGY ON VOCABULARY ACHIEVEMENT OF THE FIFTH GRADE STUDENTS’ OF ELEMENTARY SCHOOL (An Experimental Research in SD Negeri 01 Gumayun in the Academic Year of 2015/2016)

This research aims to find out whether there is significant difference between the students who are taught by using SQ3R strategy and the students who are taught without using SQ3R strategy on the fifth grade students of SD Negeri 01 Gumayun in academic year 2015/2016. The problem of the research focuses on the effect of using SQ3R strategy on the vocabulary achievement of students of SD Negeri 01 Gumayun in the academic year 2014/2015.
The logical framework of the research is the implementation of SQ3R strategy can improve the students’ vocabulary achievement. The hypothesis of the research is there is a positive effect of SQ3R strategy towards the students’ vocabulary achievement.
The writer uses two-group design; experimental group and control group. The experimental group is a group of students which are taught by using SQ3R strategy and the control group is a group of students which are taught without using SQ3R strategy. The sample of the research is fifth grade students of SD Negeri 01 Gumayun. The experimental group consists of 20 students and the control group consists of 20 students.
The instrument of the research is vocabulary multiple choice test which consists of 40 questions. The writer uses t-test to analyze the data. The result of t-test after being calculated is 2,4032, and t-table at the significant level 5% with degree of freedom 38 is 1,725. It is found that t-test is higher t-table (2,4032>1,725). It means that there is significant difference between the students who are taught by using SQ3R Strategy and the students who are taught without using SQ3R Strategy.
Based on the result of the data analysis, it can be concluded that use of SQ3R strategy gives a positive effect towards the students’ vocabulary achievement at the fifth grade students of SD Negeri 01 Gumayun. The implementation of SQ3R strategy becomes an alternative technique in teaching vocabulary. It gives more experience to the students when learning vocabulary, encourages and motivates the students to learn English, gets better comprehension, and optimizes the students’ intelligence. Therefore, the writer highly recommends the teachers to use SQ3R strategy as an alternative technique in teaching vocabulary.
