THE EFFECT OF USING DEBATE LEARNING MODEL TOWARD STUDENT’S SPEAKING ABILITY OF THE ELEVENTH GRADE STUDENTS OF SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL An Experimental Research at the Eleventh Grade Students of State Senior High School 1 Balapulang in Academic Year 2015/2016
Keywords: Effect, Debate Learning model, Speaking Ability.
The objectives of this research is to find out the effect of using debate learning model toward student’s speaking ability. Debate learning model gives positive effect toward student’s speaking ability.
The research hypothesis is using debate learning model gives positive effect toward student’s speaking ability. Debate learning model is applied to the eleventh grade students of state senior high school 1 Balapulang.
The researcher uses quantitative research as the approach, experimental research as the type of the research, and two group as the design of the research. The population in this research is the eleventh grade students of State Senior High School 1 Balapulang which is totally 293 students. The researcher uses cluster random sampling technique to choose the sample. The researcher takes 60 students as the sample of the research and they are divided into two groups; they are experimental group and control group. Each group consists of 30 students. The experimental group is taught by debate learning model and the control group is taught by conventional method. The researcher uses post-test. To get the data, the researcher uses interview and documentation. The interview is given for both of group.
The result of post-test score shows that the sum of the experimental group is 2400 and the control group is 2250, with the mean of the experimental group is 80 and the control group is 75. There is a significant result of post-test between experiment and control group. Then, the calculation of t-test shows that t-test is 3.283 with the degree of freedom (df) is 58. The level of significant (α) is 5% and the t-table is 1.645. It means that t-test is significantly higher than t-table (3.283>1.645). Therefore, the null hypothesis (Ho) is rejected and the alternative hypothesis (H1) is accepted. It means there is a positive effect toward student’s speaking ability between students who are taught by using debate learning model and those who are not taught by using debate learning model. According to the analysis, debate learning model gives positive effect toward student’s speaking ability. By using debate, students are able to communicate with others, and express their ideas and opinions. Therefore, using debate learning model is highly recommended by the researcher toward student’s speaking ability.
