THE EFFECTS OF ROLE PLAY TECHNIQUE TOWARDS THE STUDENTS SPEAKING ABILITY An Experimental Study at the 8th Grade Students of SMP Darul Ulum Pemalang in Academic Year 2015/2016

This research focus on using the effect of the role play technique in the students speaking ability. The research is to know the effect of role play to the students speaking ability. The researcher used experiment pre- test and post test.
The objective of the research are to describe the implementation of role play in teaching speaking, to find out the effectiveness of role play in increasing the students’ speaking ability, to find out the positive effect of role play to the students’ speaking ability. Role play technique is one of the technique that is good for improving students speaking ability.
The research hypothesis is the use of role play technique gives positive effect toward students’ speaking ability. The Role play technique is applied to the eight grade students of SMP Darul Ulum in the Academic year 2015/2016.
In this research the population is the second year students of Junior High School Darul Ulum Pemalang which is divided into five classes. In this grade, the number of students are 125. The writer chooses VIII-E class with 22 students as the sample to observe by using purposive sampling. The students of VIII-E class with 22 students with two groups (experiment group and control group) the first group with eleven students as a control group and the second group with eleven students as an experiment group. The experiment group is the group of the students who are taught by using Role Play Technique. The control group is the group of students who are taught without using Role Play Technique. Before teaching the writer gives pre test to the experiment group and control group and after teaching the writer gives post test to the experiment group and control group.
The writer analysis data by using t-test, score of t-test is 6.036, while score of t table is at 5% level significance and on degree of 10 is 2.228. Thus, t test is higher than t table ( 6.036 > 2.228). According to result of data, hypothesis alternative is accepted, and hypothesis null is rejected. It means there is a positive effect towards students’ speaking ability between students who are taught by using Role Play technique and those who are not taught by using Role Play technique at the eight grade students of SMP Darul Ulum Pemalang. According o the analysis, Role Play Technique gives positive effect towards students speaking ability. Then the writer suggest to the English teachers use Role Play to improve students speaking ability.
