THE EFFECT OF USING THINK PAIR WRITE (TPW) METHOD TOWARDS STUDENTS WRITING ACHIEVEMENT (An Experimental Study on the Tenth Grade Students of SMA Negeri 1 Balapulang in Academic Year of 2015/2016)

The objectives of this study was : (1) to find out whether the use of Think
Pair Write Method gives positive effect toward students’ writing achievement of
the tenth grade students of SMA N 1 Balapulang or not , (2) to find out whether or
not there is any significant difference between the students who are taught using
Think Pair Write Method and those who are not taught using Think Pair Write
Method. Based on the background and the theory, the hypothesis of this study are:
using think pair write is effective in the teaching of writing prosedure texts on the
students of the tenth grade at SMA N 01 Balapulang in the academic year
2015/2016.
The population in this study were students of class X in SMA 01
Balapulang in the academic year 2015/2016. The population in this research were
256 students from 8 classes, namely class X1, X2, X3, X4, X5, X6, X7, and X8
Based on the total population, the writer use the class 2 (X1 and X6) which
consists of 30 students for each class as a sample selected using random cluster
sampling technique. In the design of the study, the writer used two group design,
the experimental group and the control group.
The research instrument used in this study is the writing test in which
students were tested to write a prosedure text with the title of the specified
minimum of 150 words in 90 minutes. To determine the validity and reliability of
the instrument, the writer asks the feasibility instrument to consult the lecturer and
teacher subjects, and adjust the instrument with the material being taught. Data
were analyzed using t-test formula to test for differences between the
experimental group and the control group. The data show that the results of t-test
was 3.225, with a degree of validity (df) is 58 and the level of significance (α) 5%
= 1.645. Thus the results of the t-test is greater than t-table (3.225> 1.645). This
means that this hypothesis is accepted.
From the analysis above, the writer concludes that the effect of using
Think Pair Write Method effectively used in teaching writing prosedure text class
X SMA N 01 Balapulang in the academic year 2015/2016. For the English
teachers of SMAN 1 Balapulang, they are suggested to keep on motivating their
students to improve their English especially in writing ability.
