There are four skills in learning language; listening, reading, speaking, and writing. Writing is one of the most important skills in learning language. Being able to write is vital skill for speakers of foreign language like Indonesian students. Nowadays, Indonesia is preparing for the global market which is starting at 2015. English, as an international language has an important role here. Meanwhile, some schools in Indonesia are using the Curriculum 2013 with its recommended learning model; Project-Based learning, Discovery learning, and Problem-Based learning.
The objectives of this research are to describe the implementation of Problem-Based Learning in teaching writing included the role of the teacher and the students, and to find out the students’ response during the learning activities. Problem-Based Learning is one of learning strategies that is recommended in Curriculum 2013, and it is suitable to be conducted for high students.
In this research, the population is all first grade students in SMA N 3 Brebes. The writer uses proportion random sampling. The total of the sample are 89 students who fill the questionnaire, and one English teacher who is observed by the researcher. Meanwhile, the research instruments are observation sheet, interview sheet, documentation, and questionnaire.
The writer analizes data through the observation sheet which contains of some points of Problem-Based Learning phases. The writer also analizes data through interview with the teacher about the implementation of Problem-Based Learning, and also analizes data which is taken from questionnaire about the students’ response that are taught by this learning strategy. According to result of data, the teacher implements Problem-Based Learning well, and the response of the students are good. Then, the writer suggests to other English teachers who will conduct this learning strategy that they should master the steps of PBL, and should be a creative teacher in order to have a good response from the students.
