The objective of this Research Project is to find out the effect of using Vocabulary Self-Collection Strategy (VSS) on the students’ achievement in writing descriptive text.
The research hypothesis is Vocabulary Self-Collection Strategy (VSS) gives positive effect toward students’ achievement in writing descriptive text. Vocabulary Self-Collection Strategy (VSS) is applied to the eighth grade students of MTs Asy-Syafi’iyyah Jatibarang Brebes in Academic Year of 2016/2017.
The population of this research is 306 of the eighth grade students in MTs Asy-Syafi’iyyah Jatibarang Brebes in Academic Year of 2016/2017. The total sample are 60 students; 30 students as experimental group and 30 students as control group which use cluster random sampling with two group design. The experimental group is the group of students who are taught by using Vocabulary Self-Collection Strategy (VSS). The control group is the group of students who are taught coventional teaching or without using Vocabulary Self-Collection Strategy (VSS). The strategy that is used in control group is scientific approach Curriculum 2013 which usually used at school. The treatment of this reasearch takes eight meetings. The writer gives a test to experimental group and control group. The instrument of this research is writing test.
The writer analyse data by using t-test, score of t-test is 5,064. For score of t-table is at 5% level significance and on the degree of freedom 58 is 2,002. Thus, t-test is higher than t-table (5,064 > 2,002). According to result of data, hypothesis t-test is rejected, and hypothesis t-table is accepted. It means there is a positive effect towards students’ achievement in writing descriptive text.
It is suggested to the English teachers use Vocabulary Self-Collection Strategy (VSS) to improve students’ ability in writing especially writing descriptive text.
