THE EFFECTIVENESS OF CONTROLLED WRITING TO IMPROVE STUDENTS’ ABILITY IN WRITING DESCRIPTIVE TEXT FOR FIRST GRADE STUDENTS OF SECONDARY SCHOOL An Experimental Research in SMP N 1 Wanasari-Brebesin the Academic Year of 2016/2017

The objectives of this research are to find out the effectiveness of controlled writing in improving students’ ability in writing descriptive text and to find out the significant difference between students who are taught using controlled writing and students who are not taught using controlled writing of the First Grade Students of Secondary School of SMP N 1 Wanasari-Brebes in the academic year 2016/2017.
The research is two group design. The total population is 338 students. The random sampling is done to take 60 students devided into two groups sample; 30 students as the experimental group and 30 students as the control group.
This researcher uses a writing test as the research instrument to collect data, the data is analysed by using t-test formula. Based on the data analysis, the value of t-test is 2.319 with Degree of Freedom (df) is 30+30–2=58, and Significant Level is 5%, the value of t – table is 1.672, it means that t – test is higher than t-table (3.258 > 1.672). Hence hypothesis of the research: The use of Controlled Writing gives a positive effect in improving students’ ability in writing descriptive text of the first grade students of SMP N 1 Wanasari-Brebes is accepted.
The conclusion is there is positive effect of the use of controlled writing in improving students’ ability in writing descriptive text of the first grade students of SMP N 1 Wanasari-Brebes in the academic year 2016/2017. It is suggested for teacher to apply controlled writing to improve students’ ability in writing descriptive text.
