THE EFFECT OF METACOGNITIVE STRATEGY ON STUDENTS’ READING COMPREHENSION (An Experimental Research at The Tenth Grade Students of State Senior High School 3 Brebes in Academic Year of 2016/2017)

This study is aimed to investigate the effectiveness of using metacognitive strategy on tenth graders' reading comprehension. In order to achieve the study aims, the writer used the experimental approach with two groups design (experimental and control) to students’ Reading Comprehension of the tenth graders of State Senior High School 3 Brebes in Academic year 2016/2017.
Based on the review of related theories, and frame of thinking the hyporesearch project of this research is the use of Metacognitive Strategy will give positive effect toward students’ reading comprehension of the tenth graders of State Senior High School 3 Brebes in Academic year 2016/2017.
The population of this research is the tenth grade students of State Senior High School 3 Brebes. The sample of this study is 60 students. They are divided into two groups. Each group contains 30 students. This research uses random sampling technique to take the samples. The instrument used in this research is test. The type of the test used is multiple choice with 4 options (A, B, C, or D). The number of the test is 40 items done in 90 minutes. The writer conducts try out test on 30 students who have the same ability with research samples to determine the validity and reliability of the test instrument. Data analysis is tested by using t-test, to test the average difference of two groups. The t- table is 3.732 at the 5% significance level and degrees of freedom (df) 58 so, t is higher than t-table (3.732 >2,002). Based on the result of this study, it is concluded that the use of Metacognitive Strategy gives positive effect toward students’ vocabulary achievement of the tenth graders of State Senior High School 3 Brebes in Academic year 2016/2017.
After doing the research, the writer has some suggestions. The teacher should have creativity to teach the students because there are many media of teaching that can be applied in the class and the teacher should give motivation to students in learning English, therefore the students competence in English will increase..
