Reading is one of the language skills which have a purpose to get information, understanding the written words, and getting the meaning from the text. Many kinds of learning media can be used by the teachers in teaching activity especially in teaching reading such short stories. The objective of this research is to find out the effect of short stories on students’ reading comprehension ability of the eighth students of MTs N Slawi. Based on related theories and logical framework, the hypothesis of the research is proposed as follows: “There is significant difference of reading achievement between students who are taught by using short stories and students who are not taught by using short stories to the eighth grade of MTs N Slawi”
This research is experimental research. In conducting the research, the writer used two group design. The population of this research is the students of the eighth graders of MTs N Slawi which is totally 320 students. The writer took the sample by using cluster random sampling technique. The sample consists of 60 students that was divided into two groups. Group 1 as experimental group consists of 30 students who are taught by using short stories and group 2 as control group consists of 30 students who are not taught by using short stories. The writer uses test as instrument of the research which consists of 40 items in the form of multiple choice test. To measure the reliability and validity of the test, the writer gave the try-out test to the 30 students who did not belong to the sample of the research.
To analyze the data, the writer used SPSS 22 for windows, to find out the differences between those two groups. On the level of significance 5% and degree freedom (df) = (n1 + n2) – 2 = (30 + 30) – 2 = 58, the writer finds that the t-table is 2.002 and t-test is 12.432. It proves that the result of the t-test is higher than t-table (12.432>2.002). It means there is significant difference of students’ reading comprehension ability between students who are taught by using short stories and students who are not taught by using short stories.
Thus it could be concluded that the use of short stories in the teaching of reading gives a positive effect on students’ reading comprehension ability of the eighth graders of MTs N Slawi.
