There are many students get low score in reading comprehension test. They feel bored while following the lesson. The new stategy to teach reading is needed. The objectives of this research projectare to find out the effectiveness of annotating text strategy on the students’ reading comprehension ability and to find out the significant differencebetween the students who are taught by annotating text strategy and the students who are not taught by annotating text strategy of the eighth graders of SMP Ma’arif NU 04 Jatinegara in the academic year 2016/2017.
The research is true experiment research design. The total population in this research is 69. The random sampling technique is used to choose the sample. The sample is divided into two groups; the first group isexperiment group who are taught by annotating text strategy and the second iscontrol group who are not taught by annotating text strategy. In collecting the data, pre test and post test are conducted.And the data analysis is calculated by using SPSS 22 program.
Based on data analysis, the first null hypothesis (H01) is tested by using paired sample t test, it is found that the result of Sig. (2 tailed) is lower than α (0,000 < 0,05). It means that the first null hypothesis (H01) is refused. It means that the annotating text strategy is effective on the students’ reading comprehension ability. And the second hypothesis is tested by independent sample t test, it is found that the result of t test is higher than t table (2,783 > 1,680). It means that the second null hypothesis (H02) is refused. It means that there is significant difference between the students who are taught by annotating text strategy and the students who are not taught by annotating text strategy.
It can be concluded that using annotating text strategy is effective and there is significant difference on the students’ reading comprehension ability of the eighth graders of SMP Ma’arif NU 04 Jatinegara in the academic year 2016/2017. It is suggested to apply annotating text strategy to increase reading comprehension ability of the eighth graders of junior high school.
