The objectives of this research is to find out the effect of applying Guessing Word Games toward vocabulary achievement of the second grade students of SMP N 5 Petarukan in the academic year of 2016/2017.
The population of this research is all of the second grade students in the second semester of SMP Negeri 5 Petarukan in the academic year 2016/2017. The total number of the students are 264. The samples of the research are 60 students taken by using cluster random sampling technique. They are classified into two groups, group I consists of 30 students as experimental class who are taught by applying Guessing word and group II consists of 30 students as control class who are taught by Grammar Translation Method.
The writer uses vocabulary test as the instrument of the research. The type of the test is multiple choice tests with four options. To know the validity and reability of the instrument, the writer had tried out the instrument by giving a test to 30 students having the same level competence.
T-test is used to know the different result of the two groups. The result of calculation analysis shows that t-test = 4.230, with 58 degree of freedom and significant level 5% or = 0.005, t-table is 2.002. It means that the result of t-test is higher than t-table (4.230 > 2.002). It means, there is significant difference between students who are taught by applying Guessing Word Games than students who are taught by Grammar Translation Method. Then the conclusion of this research shows that the applying of Guessing Word Games has positive effect towards vocabulary achievement of the second grade students of SMP Negeri 5 Petarukan in the academic year 2016/2017.
Guessing word can be the alternative technique in English teaching. Because it makes the students feel interesting to learn English. Guessing word also makes the students develop their English vocabularies.
