The objective of this study is to find out whether the turn taking strategies used by the participants (moderator and presidential candidates of USA) in the First Presidential Election Debate in 2016 influences the course and the outcome of the debate.
As social creatures, humans can’t live without communication. It is a process in conveying and exchanging information between two persons or more. In the process of communication, there is always a chance of misunderstanding to likely happen in every interaction. The effects of misunderstanding could be something simple and easily solved by some short explanations or it could be something bigger like fight or war that cause more serious problems in the future.
As conversation is a crucial part of communication, the ability to deliver the ideas correctly will minimize misunderstandings that happen among the speakers.
Conversation analysis to know how people take their turn in spoken interaction is important. It is an approach that looks at the way in which people take and manage turns in spoken interactions.
Turn taking is how speakers manage their turn when they are in a conversation. Stenstrom (1994) states, there are three types of turn taking strategies. The first type is taking the turn, the second one is holding the turn, and the third one is yielding the turn.
The research found 346 units of turn taking strategies during the debate, which divided into 106 units of taking the turn, 162 units of holding the turn, and 78 units of yielding the turn.
