The objectives of this research are to find out the effect of probing technique and to find out significant differences between students who are taught by probing technique and those who are not thaught by probing technique on students’ reading ability to the second graders of SMP Ma’arif NU 04 Jatinegara in Academic Year of 2016/2017.
This research is an experimental research. The total of population in this research is 44. The researcher uses clasess random sampling technique where the researcher chooses the sample that is devided into two groups. The first group is the experiment group (class C) who are taught by using probing technique and the second group (class D) who are not taught by using probing technique. The researcher takes 44 students as sample, each group consist of 25 and 19 students. There are two test ( pre-test and post-test) to see the improvement of reading achievement. In collecting data, the researcher uses test as instrument consists of 40 multiple choice which has been tested the validity and realibility by using IBM SPSS 22 program.
Based on data analysis, the first null hypothesis ( H01) is tested by using paired sample t test, it is found that the result of sig. ( 2 tailed ) is lower tham a ( 0,03<0,05). It means that the first null hypothesis (H01) is refused. Its means that probing technique is effective on students reading ability. Amd the second hyphothesis is tested by independent sample t test, it is found that the result of t test is higher than t table (2,048 > 1,628). It means that the second null hypothesis ( H02) is refused. It means that there is significant difference between the students who are taught by using probing technique and the students who are not taught by using probing technique.
It could be concluded that usning of probing technique is effective and there is significant difference on students reading ability to the second graders os SMP Ma’arif NU 04 Jatinegara in the Academic Year of 2016/2017. The researcher suggested to the English teacher to apply probing technique to increase reading achievement in the school.
