Grammatical error is an error which happens in the structure of a language and there is a set of rules that must be followed to make a good writing. The purpose of this study was to analyze and classify the types of student’s grammatical errors in writing narrative paragraph. In addition, this study was carried out to find out the percentage of each type of errors that occured on the students’ writing. The error collected was classified based on Dulay, Burt and Krashen’s theory. The method used in this study was descriptive, while the research approach is qualitative. Furthermore, the subject of this study was the tenth grade students of MAN Tegal in academic year 2016/ 2017. The writer took 20 students as the sample. The data were collected through test.
The result of the error analysis process showed that students committed error into four types: omission, addition, misformation and misordering. From the frequency of each error types, misformation was the error which most frequently produced by the students. It took 56,92 % of the total errors. Moreover, 28,02 % errors fell into error of omission and 14,36 % errors fell into addition; whereas, for Misordering, it only took 0,70 %. To sum up, it showed that the usage of the grammar in writing narrative paragraph is difficult for students.
Based on the finding previously, it can be recommended that (1) it should be explained more about the grammar for the students, so they can write the narrative paragraph grammatically correct, (2) it has to be creative in teaching writing, so it makes students interest to study more, and (3) It is suggested to give exercises regularly, because it can improve the students’ vocabularies and their skill in writing.
