The objective of this Research Projectis to find out the effect of using self selection strategy on the students’ reading achievement in recount text. Self Selection is one of the strategy in reading learning to develop and attract the students to read some reading materials based on the choose for themself.
The research hypothesis is Self Selection stratey gives positive effect toward students’ reading achievement in recount text. Self Selection strategy is applied to the tenth grade students of Islamic Vocational High School Randudongkal Pemalang in Academic Year of 2016/2017.
In this Research Project, the population is 187 students of the tenth grade students in Islamic Vocational High School Randudongkal Pemalang.The researcher uses cluster random sampling with two group design (Experiment Group and Control Group). The total sample is 60 students; 30 students as experiment group and 30 students as control group. The experiment group is the group of students who are taught by using Self Selection. The control group is the group of students who are not taught by using Self Selection strategy. After teaching for eight meetings, the researcher gives a test to experiment group and control group. The instrument of this research project is multiple-choice test which consists of 30 items and research used each items has four options.
The data is analyzedby using t-test, score of t-test is 3,0394. While score of t-table is at 5% level significance and on the degree of 58 is 1,645. It shows that t-test is higher than t-table (3.0394>1,645).It means that there is significant difference of the reading achievement between the students who are taught by using Self Selection and the students who are taught without using Self Selection strategy.
The conclusion of this research is the use of Self Selection strategy gives positive effect on the students’ reading achievement in Recount text at the tenth grade students of Islamic Vocational High School in the Academic Year of 2016/2017. It was suggested for the English teachers to apply Self Selection strategy as one of many alternatives that can be used in teaching reading.
