THE EFFECT OF PROJECT-BASED LEARNING METHOD ON STUDENTS’ ACHIEVEMENT IN READING PROCEDURE TEXT (An Experimental Study at the Seventh Grade Students of State Junior High School 12 Tegal in the Academic Year of 2016/2017)

There are some problems appeared in teaching reading. The problems happen because the material is not interesting for students, the limited time and the equipment, the technique of delivering materials is not suitable or interesting, the students have difficulties in understanding reading. Project-based learning gives the students motivation by practicing work in a group in learning reading.
The objective of this research project is to find out the effect of Project-based learning method to improve students’ achievement in reading procedure text at seventh grade students at State Junior High School 12 Tegal in the academic year of 2016/2017. The research hypothesis is the use Project-based learning method gives a positive effect on students’ achievement in reading procedure text.
In this research, the population is the students at the seventh grade of State Junior High School 12 Tegal, which is totally 210 students. This is an experimental research, the writer uses on random sampling technique with two group design (experiment group and control group) to take the sample of the research. There are 7 classes of seventh grade students but the writer only takes 2 classes as the sample of the research. The total of the sample is 60 students from E class and F class, 30 students is as experiment group and 30 students is a control group. The writer uses the test as the research instrument. The test contains 30 test items and the test type is multiple choice. After teaching for eighth meetings, the writer gave a reading test to experiment group and control group.
Based on the data analysis, the t-test is 4,626. With the degree of freedom (df)
=30+30-2= 58 and the level significance (α) = 5%, the t-table 1,671 (look on the t- table data on appendix). The t-test is higher than t-table (4,626>1,671). The writer finds out that t-test is higher than t-table, the writer can conclude that the research hipothesis is accepted. It means there is a positive effect on students’ achievement in reading procedure text.
The conclusion of this research, Project-based learning method is effective to teach reading procedure text at the seventh grade students of State Junior High School 12 Tegal. The writer suggests that the teacher needs to use Project-based learning method in teaching reading procedure text because this method is easy to be implemented and learned. The method is able to amuse and interact the students and also it can be used to improve reading procedure text.
