The objective of this research is to find out the effect of using Student Teams Achievement Divisions (STAD) on Students Reading Achievement the Eighth Grade SMP N 1 Bulakamba in the Academic Year of 2016/2017.
Based on the review of related literature, theoritical framework, the hypothesis is proposed as follows: there is a positive effect of using Student Teams Achievement Divisions (STAD) on Students Reading Achievement the Eighth Grade SMP N 1 Bulakamba in the Academic Year of 2016/2017.
This research is experimental research. The population of this research is the eighth grade students of SMP N 1 Bulakamba in the Academic Year of 2016/2017 which consist of 330 students. In this research, the writer uses 2 classes (VIII G and VIII H) which consist of 30 students for each class as the sample of the research who are selected by using cluster random sampling technique. In designing study, the writer uses Two-Group Design which consists of two classes that have same level, there are class VIII H as experiment group and class VIII G as control group. The writer uses reading test as the type of instrument of the research by using multiple choice design which consist of 40 items with four alternative a, b,c and d.
To analyze the data, the writer uses t-test formula to find out the difference of reading achievement of the two group. Based on the result of data analysis, the score of t-table at 5% level of significances is 1,645. While t-ratio ia 1,744. So, t- ratio is higher than t-table (1,744 > 1,645). According to this calculation, the research hypothesis of this research is accepted. It means that there is significant difference on reading achievement between the students who are not taught by Student Teams Achievement Divisions (STAD) and those who are not taught by using Student Teams Achievement Divisions (STAD).
The conclusion of this research shows that using Student Teams Achievement Divisions (STAD) has a positive effect on reading achievement of the eighth grade students of SMP N 1 Bulakamba in the academic year of
2016/2017.
As suggestion, the English teacher should be able to select the appropriate model of teaching reading just like using Student Teams Achievement Divisions (STAD) technique because it can reduce students’ stress and boredom.
