THE EFFECT OF USING STORY PYRAMID TECHNIQUE ON STUDENTS’ WRITING ACHIEVEMENT IN SUMMARIZING NARRATIVE TEXT (An Experimental Study of The Eighth Grade Students of SMP Negeri 1 Talang in the Academic Year of 2016/2017)

The objective of this research is to find out whether there is positive effect of applying Story Pyramid Technique on the eighth grade students’ writing achievement of Junior High School.
Based on review of related literature and frame of thinking, the hypothesis of the research is proposed as follows: There is a positive effect on students’ writing achievement in summarizing narrative text of the eighth grade students who are taught by using Story Pyramid Technique than the students who are not taught by using Story Pyramid Technique.
The population of this research is all of the eighth grade students of State Junior High School 1 Talang in the academic year of 2016/2017. The number of population is 282 students from 9 classes. This research is conducted by using two group design; the first group is called experimental group which is taught by using Story Pyramid Technique, while the second group is called control group which is not taught by using Story Pyramid Technique. The sample is taken by using cluster random sampling. Each group of samples consists of 30 students.
The instrument used in this research is writing test in the topic “A Mouse and A Lion”. The test is conducted after the two groups get treatment for 8 meetings. The test is carried out to find out whether students who are taught by using Story Pyramid Technique get better writing achievement than students who are not taught by using Story Pyramid Technique. The writing test is assessed by Brown’s writing scoring rubric.
Data analysis of this research is tested by using t-test in order to find out whether the research hypothesis is accepted or not. Based on the calculation, the t-ratio is 4.599. It is consulted with t-table on the significant level (α) of 5% and the degree of freedom (df) is 58. The t-table obtained is 1.672. It proves that t-ratio is higher than t-table (4.599 > 1.672), so the hypothesis of the research is accepted. So, the conclusion of this research is that Story Pyramid Technique gives positive effect on the writing achievement in summarizing narrative text of students who are taught by using Story Pyramid Technique.
It is suggested for the teacher to apply Story Pyramid Technique in the teaching of writing. It can be used to solve their students’ difficulties in writing the summary of narrative text. Therefore, they can improve students’ writing achievement.
