THE USE OF GRAPHIC ORGANIZER IN TEACHING READING NARRATIVE TEXT (An Experimental Research to the Tenth Graders of SMK Satya Praja 2 Petarukan in the Academic Year of 2016/2017)

The reason why the writer choses this research because there are some problems in reading activity, such as less of students’ motivation, most of the students easily get bored, lack of students’ vocabularies; difficulties in understanding the text, and also the teaching strategies applied by the teacher. Many English teachers still use conventional method in learning process. Therefore, the writer needs to apply appropriate strategy to teach reading comprehension achievement, namely Graphic Organizer strategy. The objective of this research is to find out the effectiveness of using graphic organizer in teacingh reading narrative text for the tenth grade students of SMK Satya Praja 2 Petarukan in the academic year of 2016/2017.
The type of this research is true experimental research. The population of this research is the tenth graders of SMK Satya Praja 2 Petarukan in the academic year of 2016/2017, which total number of population is 478 students. The writer used cluster random sampling technique with two group design, namely control group and experimental group to take the sample of the research. The total numbers of sample are 60 students. The number of the test is 40 items done in 80 minutes. The writer conducts try out test on 30 students who have the same ability with research samples to determine the validity and reliability of the test instrument. The writer used SPSS 22.0 to analyze the data in this research.
The treatments conducted in 8 meetings for experimental class and 8 meetings for control class. Before the treatment the writer gives pre-test for each group to know the prior knowledge of the student about reading achievement. At the end of the treatment, the writer gives post-test for each group to collect the data for this research. The writer does data analysis by using t-test and the score of the t-test is 3.815. While score of t-table is at 5% significance and on the degree of 58 is 2.002. Thus, t-test is higher than t-table (3.815 > 2.002).
Based on the result of those data analysis, the null hypothesis is rejected and the alternative hypothesis is accepted. The finding showed that the use of Graphic Organizer is effective to teach reading narrative text and there is significant difference in teaching reading narrative text to the tenth grade students of SMK Satya Praja 2 Petarukan in the academic year of 2016/2017.
