THE EFFECT OF THE APPLICATION OF CROSSWORD PUZZLE TOWARD THE EIGHTH GRADE STUDENTS’ VOCABULARY MASTERY (An Experimental Research at SMP Negeri 1 Kramat in the Academic Year of 2016/2017)

The objective of this research is to know the effect of the application of crossword puzzle toward the eighth grade students’ vocabulary mastery. Crossword puzzle is a kind of word game.
The type of this research is experimental research with two group design and use post test only. The population of this research is the eighth grade students at SMP Negeri 1 Kramat in the academic year of 2016/2017. Cluster random sampling technique is used to take the samples. The total number of samples is 60 students. There are 30 students who are taught by the application of crossword puzzle as an experimental group and 30 students who are taught by grammar translation method (GTM) as a control group.
The treatments were conducted 8 times for both experimental group and control group. To analyze the data t-count was used and the score of the t-count was 3,155. While the score of t-table at 5% significance on the degree of freedom of 58 was 1,645. Thus, t-count was higher than t-table (3,155 > 1,564). Based on the result of data analysis, the null hypothesis was rejected and the alternative hypothesis was accepted. It can be concluded that the application of crossword puzzle gave positive effect toward the eighth grade students’ vocabulary mastery at SMP Negeri 1 Kramat in the academic year of 2016/2017.
Thus, the application of crossword puzzle is recommended in teaching vocabulary because it can improve the students’ vocabulary mastery. The students’ interest and the students’ motivation are also improved in learning vocabulary by the application of crossword puzzle.
