THE EFFECT OF USING STORY MAPPING TECHNIQUE ON READING ACHIEVEMENT OF THE TENTH GRADE STUDENTS OF VOCATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL (An Experimental Research in SMK Muhammadiyah Bulakamba in the Academic Year 2016/2017)

The objective of this research is to find out whether Story Mapping Technique gives the positive effect or not toward the students’ reading achievement on the tenth grade students of Vocational High School at SMK Muhammadiyah Bulakamba in Academic Year 2016/2017.
The population of this research is 270 student in tenth grade students of SMK Muhammadiyah Bulakamba. The writer takes the sample by using cluster random sampling. The writer chooses two classes, the first group as experimental group, and the second group as control group. The writer needs 60 students to be divided into two classes, 30 students for to experimental and 30 student to control group. In experimental group, the writer implements story mapping technique. The control group, the writer implements problem based learning.
This research is experimental research that involves twovariables, they are the story mapping technique and the students’ reading achievement. The function of this research is to see whether the story mapping technique can influence students’ achievement on reading lesson.
The research instrument used in this research is multiple choices that consists of 40 questions. To measure the validity and the reability of the test, the writer tries out the instrument to the try out group which consists of 50 questions.
The data is analyzed by using t-test formula. It shows that t-test result is 6,002 with the degree of freedom 58 and the level of significance (∝) 0.50 = 1,671. It shows that t-test is higher than t-table (6,002 > 1,671). As the t-test is higher than t-table, hypothesis of this research is then accepted.
Based on the result of the data analysis, the writer can conclude that using story mapping strategy gives positive effect to the students’ reading achievement of the tenth grade students of SMK Muhammadiyah Bulakamba in the academic year 2016/2017. Therefore, it is suggested for the teacher use story mapping technique in reading learning process because this technique easy to application students and easy to understand especially to Vocational High School Muhammadiyah Bulakamba students.
