THE EFFECT OF USING CAPSULE VOCABULARY STRATEGY (CVS) ON READING ACHIEVEMENT OF THE ELEVENTH GRADE STUDENTS OF SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL (An Experimental Research at SMA Negeri 1 Bojong in the Academic Year of 2016/2017)

Capsule vocabulary Strategy is one of strategy which can used in teaching reading. This strategy helps students in comprehending the reading text by defines the words’ meaning related with the topic. The students should be able to find out the words’ meaning before they read the reading text. The objective of this Research Project is to find out the effect of using Capsule Vocabulary Strategy on the students reading achievement.
The research is experimental research. The population is all of the eleventh grade students of SMA Negeri 1 Bojong which is totally 248 students which from eight classes. The writer used cluster random sampling with two group design (Experiment Group and Control Group). The total sample are 60 students; 30 students as experiment group and 30 students as control group. The experiment group is the group of students who are taught by using Capsule Vocabulary Strategy. The control group is the group of students who are taught by using Know What Learn Strategy. After teaching for eight meetings, the writer gives a reading test to experiment group and control group. The instrument of this research project is multiple-choice reading test which consists of 50 items and each items has five options, they are A,B,C,D, and E. The question is based on the reading text. There are nine reading texts for 50 questions. The time alocation of the test is 90 minutes.
The writer analyzed the data by using t-test, score of t-test is 3,079. While score of t-table at 5% level significance and on the degree of freedom 58 is 2,576. Thus, t-test is higher than t-table (3,079 > 2,576). According to result of data, hypothesis t-test is rejected, and hypothesis t-table is accepted. It means there is a positive effect on students’ reading achievement who are taught by using Capsule Vocabulary Strategy.
