THE EFFECTIVENESS OF USING PEER-ASSISTED LEARNING STRATEGIES IN TEACHING WRITING RECOUNT TEXT (An Experimental Study to the Eleventh Grade Students of SMA Al-Irsyad Tegal in the Academic Year 2016/2017)

The objectives of this research project are to determine whether the use of Peer-Assisted Learning Strategies have a positive effect on the students’ ability in writing Recount text to the eleventh-grade students of SMA Al-Irsyad Tegal and to determine how the students respond to the use of Peer-assisted Learning Strategies in teaching writing Recount text. PALS is applied to the eleventh grade students of SMA Al-Irsyad Tegal in the Academic Year 2016/2017.
The population in this research is all of the eleventh grade students in SMA Al-Irsyad Tegal, which is totaly 186 students. The researcher uses cluster random sampling with two group design (experimental group and control group). The total of the sampel is 60 students, 30 students is experimental group and the rest of them is control group. The experimental group is the group of students who are tought by using PALS. The control group is the group of students who are tought without using PALS. After teaching for eighth meetings, the researcher gives a writing test to both of group.
The researcher analyzed the data using SPSS 22 through comparing means then independent samples T test . Thus, the result is that score of t-counted is 4,762 and t-tabel is 2,002. It means that t-counted is greather than t-tabel (4,762>2,002) and Sig. (2-tailed) 0.000 is less than 0.05, the Null Hypothesis (Ho) is rejected and the Alternative Hypothesis (Ha) is accepted. Based on the questionnaires given, there is a positive respond of the students to the PALS. It is shown by the data that The students 83% like writing recount text with a peer, 87% students think that the use of PALS decreases their difficulty in writing Recount text.
The conclusion of this research is that the use of PALS have a positive effect on students’ ability in writing recount text. English teachers are suggested to apply Peer-Assisted Learning Strategies in teaching writing recount text. Because teaching writing with PALS can improve students’ achievement in writing Recount text. In addition, they should give their students more writing assignments to make them accustomed to write.
