THE EFFECT OF USING POETRY BY WILLIAM BLAKE TOWARDS STUDENTS’ PRONUNCIATION ABILITY (An Experimental Research of the Eleventh Grade Students at SMA N 5 Tegal in the Academic Year of 2016/2017)

Poem is arrangement of words written or spoken: traditionally a rhytmical composition, sometimes rhymed, expressing experiences, ideas, or emotions in a style more concentrated, imaginative, and powerful then that of ordinary speech or prose. The objective of this research is to find out whether poem reading practice gives significant effect towards students’ pronunciation ability for eleventh grade students of SMA N 5 Tegal in the academic year of 2016/2017.
The population of this research is the eleventh grade students of SMA N 5 Tegal. The number of population is 224 students from 8 classes. This research is conducted by using one group pretest posttest design. The sample of this research, class XI IPS 4, is taken by using cluster random sampling. Total students of samples consists of 32 students but the researcher only used 30 students. This research belongs to pre-experimental research. The instrument used in this research is a poem by William Blake entitled “A Divine Image”. The researcher conducted the pretest before the treatment, the conducted the posttest.
Data analysis of this research is tested by using t-test in order to find out whether the research hypothesis is accepted or not. Based on the calculation, the t-ratio is 3,36. It is consulted with t-table on the significant level (α) of 5% and the degree of freedom (df) is 58. The t-table obtained is 1,645. It proves that t-ratio is higher than t-table (3,36>1,645), so the hypothesis of the research is accepted.
The conclusion of this research is there is significant effect of using poetry towards students’ pronunciation ability. The strategy of reading poem practice is proven to be one of the effective strategies to make students interested in learning pronunciation. It also makes the situation in the classroom more lively, so it prevents the students from getting bored. It is proven by the questionnaire that the researcher gave to the students. 19 students said that they enjoyed the learning pronunciation by using poetry, and 11 students claimed that they enjoyed it very much.
