The objective of this research project is to find out the effect of using Free Voluntary Reading on the students reading achievement. Free Voluntary Reading is one of reading strategy which can used in teaching reading.
The research hypothesis is Free Voluntary Reading gives positive effect toward students reading achievement. Free Voluntary Reading is applied to the seventh grade students of SMP N 2 Talang in Academic Year of 2016/2017.
In this Research Project, the population is the seventh grade students in SMP N 2 Talang. Which is totaly 265 students. The researcher uses cluster random sampling with two group design (Experiment Group and Control Group). The total sample are 64 students; 32 students as experiment group and 32 students as control group. The experiment group is the group of students who are taught by using Free Voluntary Reading. The control group is the group of students who are taught by using conventional teaching. The researcher gives a test to experiment group and control group. The instrument of this research project is multiple-choice test which consists of 40 items and research used each items has four options.
The data was analyzed by using t-test, the score of t-test is 2,044. While score of t-table is at 5% level significance and on the degree of 62 is 1,645. Thus, t-test is higher than t-table (2,044 > 1,645). According to result of data, hypothesis t-test is rejected, and hypothesis t-table is accepted.
The conclusion of this research is a positive effect towards reading achievement to the students who are taught by using Free Voluntary Reading than the students who are taught by using conventional teaching. According to the analysis, Free Voluntary Reading gives positive effect towards students reading achievement at the seventh grade students of SMP N 2 TALANG. Then, the researcher suggest to the English teachers use Free Voluntary Reading Strategy to teaching reading achievement of the students.
