THE EFFECT OF VOCABULARY SELF-COLLECTION STRATEGY (VSS) ON STUDENTS’ VOCABULARY ACHIEVEMENT (An Experimental Research at The Eighth Graders of SMPN 1 Wanasari in The Academic Year of 2016/2017)

Vocabulary takes an important role in the context of learning new language. Having low vocabulary proficiency will cause an obstacle for the students in learning English. Discern to the statement the researcher chose Vocabulary self-collection strategy to promotes word consciousness. VSS is one of interactive teaching learning strategy that increased students’ capacity to be strategic and independent word learners. In this strategy the students engage in their own learning. Discover how to recognize unfamiliar or interesting words from their readings, develop their vocabular¬ies and become word conscious. Hereby, The objective of this research is to find out the effectivenes of Vocabulary Self-Collection Strategy on students’ vocabulary achievement.
This research was quantitative experimental research. The population of this research were 312 students from the eighth graders of SMPN 1 Wanasari and the sample were 60 students who are selected by using cluster random sampling technique. The researcher uses two-group design those are 30 students as experiment group who are taught by using VSS and 30 students as control group who are not taught by using VSS. Objective vocabulary test was used as the type of instrument by using multiple choice design which consist of 30 items. The procedure used by the researcher were try out, pre-test, treatment, and post-test. The researcher uses SPSS 22 program for windows to analyzed the data.
The result of paired sample t-test showed that students’ mean score of experimental group in pre-test was 72,9667 while in post-test increased to 82,4333. It means that VSS is effective to teach vocabulary. It can be proven by the calculation of t-test result. The total of t-statistic is 4.885 with df = 29 and level significance 5 % = 2.045. Here by, t-statistic was higher than t-table (4.885 > 2.045) and P value (sig. 2-tailed) is 0,000 < α (0.005). It means that null hypotesis is rejected and alternative hypotesis is accepted.
The researcher conclude that Vocabulary Self-Collection Strategy give positive effect on students’ vocabulary achievement and enhance vocabulary growth. As suggestion, Teacher should be able to select the appropriate model of teaching vocabulary like using Vocabulary Self-Collection Strategy because VSS is able to encourage students to be more active in the class.
