Keywords : Mnemonic Instruction,Vocabulary and Achievement.
Vocabulary is one of an important thing in English learning that can not be conveyed by people. For gaining a good ability in listening, speaking, reading, and writing, people need to have a good vocabulary mastery. That is the reason why this part becomes the basic need in language learning and when the researcher found that vocabulary mastery of Junior high school students are very bad, then teaching vocabulary through Mnemonic Instruction to the eight graders of State Junior High School 01 Wanasari Brebes was chosen to solve the problem. This research is aimed to know whether there is a significant difference achievement between students who are taught by using mnemonic instruction and students who are taught by using conventional method
The population of the research were 312 students and sample were 60 students. Those are selected by using clustor random sampling. This research used two group designs, experimental and control group. As the instrument of the research, the objective test was used in pre-test and post-test. Total of each test was 30 multiple choice items. To measure the data, the writer used SPSS 22 by using Independent sample t-test.
The result of this research showed that the students’ mean score in pretest was .79,70 while the posttest mean score was 85,73. It also showed that there was a significant difference of the mean score. It had increased to be 6,03. The total of t-test is 3,010 then it consulted into t-table with 95% of confidence level and degree of freedom(df) is (n1+n2) – 2 = (30+30) – 2 = 58. The total of t-table is 2,002. It can be said that t-test is higher than t-table. Thus, it can be said that there is significant difference between students who are taught by using mnemonic instruction and those who are not.
The researcher concluded that the null hypothesis (H02) is rejected and the alternative hypothesis (H2) is accepted. It means that Mnemonic Instruction give positive effect on students’ vocabulary achievement and can be used to increase their vocabulary mastery. She also suggest that teacher should give another new method in teaching english, in order to make students fun and have a good enthusiasm when receiving English lesson.
