AN ANALYSIS OF STUDENTS’ ERRORS IN USING ENGLISH SIMPLE PRESENT TENSE IN WRITING DESCRIPTIVE TEXT A Descriptive Study of the Second Grade Students at SMP N 01 Tarub in Academic Year 2015/2016

This study was carried out to find out empirical evidence of the most common errors and the source of errors in descriptive text writing made by the second grade students of SMP N 01 Tarub. The method used in this study was a case study included as quantitative descriptive research. The data was presented in descriptive analysis way and the procedure of Error Analysis used is based on Ellis and Barkhuizen theory.
The result of the study showed that there are the highest-three and the lowest-three errors made by the students. The highest-three common errors are misformation of alternating form with the number of 203 or 24.52% errors, misorder with the number of 141 or 17.03% errors and simple omission and omission of verb auxiliaries have same number 77 or 9.30%. The lowest-three errors are 18 or 2.17 % addiition of regularization, 24 or 2.90 % omission of preposition and 29 or 3.50 % misformation of archi-form.
Based on the total result types of errors, the writer found that the number of total source of errors are interlingual transfer which has 330 or 39.86% source of errors, intralingual transfer has 283 or 34.18% source of errors, communication strategy which has 186 or 22.46% source of errors,and context of learning which has 29 or 3.5% source of errors.
