The objective of this research is to find out the effect of applying mediated instruction of text strategy on reading achievement of the eighth grade student of secondary school at SMP N 4 Tegal in the academic year 2015/2016.Student’ English Achievement is effected by many factors. One of them is the choice of learning technique. Mediated Instruction of Text Strategy as one of kinds of teaching technique may also make students get different experience in learning so that it can increase on the students’ reading achievement in English learning.
This research uses experimental research of which the design is two groups design.The population of this research is 158 students of the eighth grade students of SMPN 4 Tegal. This research conducted by sample of 60 students who are selected by using cluster random sampling and the sample consists of 2 groups.They are 30 students as experimental group who are treated by using mediated instruction of text strategy and 30 students as control group who are treated by using direct method.
The data of the research is obtained by conducting test. The kind of the test of this research is multiple choice items of reading test and consists of 40 items. The writer had tried out the instument by giving test to other students who have same competence with the sample.
This research uses SPSS program to analyzing the data.Data analysis of this research is tested by using t-test. Based on the result with the degree of freedom (df) 58 on the level significant of 5% t-tableis 1,645, it shows that t-ratio is higher than t-table (9,045 > 1,645). It means that there is significant difference in reading achievement between the students who are taught by using mediated instruction of text strategy and the students who are not taught by using mediated instruction of text strategy on reading achievement.
Based on analysis value above, the students who are taught by using mediated instruction of text strategy is better that students whoare not taught by using mediated instruction of text strategy. It means there is positive effect of using mediated instruction of text strategy on the reading achievement.
There are several suggestions in order to increase students reading achievement. First, teacher should consider the level of difficulty of the material and the students’ background knowledge before the teacher give the question. Second, the teacher should has more creativeness to built up student’s interest. Third, the teacher should design the class activities.
