THE EFFECTIVENESS OF USING STAR (SELECT, TEACH, ACTIVATE, REVISIT) TECHNIQUE ON STUDENTS’ VOCABULARY ACHIEVEMENT (An Experimental Research at the First Grade Students of SMP NU 01 Dukuhturi Tegal in Academic year 2015/2016)

The objective of this research is to know whether there is any positive effect of using STAR (Select, Teach, Activate and Revisit) technique on students’ vocabulary achievement of SMP NU 01 Dukuhturi in the academic year of 2015-2016. The hyporesearch project of this research is formulated as the implementation of STAR (Select, Teach, Activate and Revisit) technique will give a positive effect significantly on students’ vocabulary achievement of First grade students of SMP NU 01 Dukuhturi in the academic year of 2015-2016.
The population of this study is the First grade students of SMP NU 01 Dukuhturi in the academic year of 2015-2016. The sampling technique used is Cluster Random Sampling. The sample in this study is 60 students covering 30 students of VII A as the control group and 30 students of VII B as the experimental group. The instrument of collecting data is multiple choice which consisted of 30 items and research items has four options. The technique of analyzing data used is t-test significance level 5 % and degree of freedom ( n + n – 2) 58. The t-test of this research was 2,130 while the t-table was 2,002. It means that t-ratio is higher than t-table (2,130 > 2,002). It can be concluded that hyporesearch project of the research is accepted.
The result of this research shows that STAR (Select, Teach, Activate and Revisit) technique gives a positive effect towards students’ vocabulary achievement. Furthermore, STAR (Select, Teach, Activate and Revisit) technique can help the students to explore their vocabulary knowledge.
Based on the research findings, it is suggested for teachers to use STAR (Select, Teach, Activate and Revisit) technique in teaching and learning vocabulary. It is recommended to add some activities in applying STAR (Select, Teach, Activate and Revisit) technique in class in order to avoid students’ boredom in memorizing vocabulary.
