There are some problems appeared in teaching vocabulary in some of educational institution especially the school in remote area. The problems happen because the material is not interesting for students, the limited time and the equipment, the technique of delivering materials is not suitable or interesting, Audio Visual Method gives the students motivation to learn the vocabulary by using audio visual media.
The objective of this research project is to find out the use of Audio Visual Method toward students’ vocabulary achievement of the eight grade students of SMP N 3 Talang in the academic year of 2016/2017. The research hypothesis is that the use of Audio Visual Method gives a positive effect on students’ vocabulary achievement.
This research is experimental. In conducting the research, the writer used two group design. Population of this study were 234 students of the second grade of SMP Negeri 3 Talang. The cluster random sampling technique was used to take the sample. The sample consisted of 50 students that was divided into two groups. The experimental group consisted of 25 students who were taught by using Audio Visual Method (AVM) and The control group consisted of 25 students who were not taught by using Audio Visual Method (AVM). The writer used the test as the research instrument. The test contained 30 test items and the test type was multiple choice. After teaching for eighth meetings, the writer gave a post test to experiment group and control group.
To analyze the data, the writer used t-test formula to know the difference of vocabulary achievement of the two groups. Based on the result of data analysis, the score of t-table at 5% level of significances is 1,645. While t-ratio is 2,531. So, t-ratio is higher than t-table (2,531>1,645). According to this calculation, the research hypothesis of this research is accepted.
From the data above, the conclusion of this research is there is a positive effect in The use of the Audio Visual Method (AVM) in vocabulary achievement of the eight grade students at SMP 3 Talang in the academic year of 2016/2017. The writer suggests that the teacher needs to use Audio Visual Method in teaching vocabularies because this method is easy to be implemented and learned. The method is able to amuse and interact the students and also it can be used to improve students’ vocabulary achievement.
