THE EFFECT OF USING PELMANISM TECHNIQUE ON VOCABULARY ACHIEVEMENT OF THE EIGHT GRADE STUDENTS OF JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL (An Experimental Study of the Eight Grade Students of SMP N 1 Talang in the Academic Year of 2016/2017)

The objective of this research project was to find out whether using Pelmanism technique gives positive effect on students’ vocabulary achievement. Pelmanism is one of technique which used in teaching vocabulary. The research hypothesis is Pelmanism Technique gives positive effect on students vocabulary achievement. Pelmanism Technique is applied to the eight grade students of SMP N 1 Talang in Academic Year 2016/2017.
The population was the eighth grade students in SMP N 1 Talang, which was totally 306 students. The writer use cluster random sampling with two group design (Experiment Group and Control Group). The total samples was 60 students; 30 students as experiment group and 30 students as control group. The experiment group was the group of students who are taught by using Pelmanism. The control group was the group of students who are taught by using Semantic Mapping. After teaching for eight meetings, the writer gave a test to experiment group and control group. The instrument of this research project was multiple-choice test which consists of 40 items and research used each items has four options.
The writer analyzed data by using t-test, score of t-test was 3,736. While score of t-table was at 5% level significance and on the t-table was 1,645. Thus, t-test was higher than t-table (3,812>1,645). According to result of data, hypothesis t-test was rejected, and hypothesis t-table was accepted.
The conclusion stated that there was positive effect on students’ vocabulary achievement to the students who are taught by using Pelmanism Technique. Then, the writer suggests to the English teachers use Pelmanism Technique to improve the vocabulary achievement of the students.
