This research was inteded to improve the students’ reading comprehension achievement in learning descriptive text by applying Snowball Throwing Technique at the tenth grade of SMA Al Muawanah Balapulang in the academic year of 2017/2018.
This study was classroom action research consisting of two cycles. The researcher worked collaboratively with the English teacher in implementing the actions. The data of this research were qualitative and quantitative. The qualitative data were obtained by observing the teaching and learning process during the implementation of the actions, and interviewing the students of class X of SMA Al Muawanah Balapulang and the English teacher as the collaborator, while the quantitative data were gained through assessing students’ ability in comprehending descriptive texts by giving them a pre-test and post-test in each cycle. The data were in the form of field notes, interview transcripts, and test scores.
The results of this study showed that the implementation of Snowball Throwing Technique in reading was believed to be effective to improve students’ ability in comprehending Descriptive Texts. Snowball Throwing Technique could make the students learn reading more interesting because the method stimulate the students to comprehend a passage by constructing questions to be answered by another student. The question was written down in a piece of paper shaped to be like a ball then throw it to the other students. This game could make them to be more enjoyable due to the unique way in applying this method.
The reseracher found that there was improvement due the implementation of Snowball Throwing Technique. It was proved by the mean of score pre-test, post-test in cycle I and post-test in cycle II. The mean score of pre-test was 59.40, while the mean score of post test in cycle I was 65.10 and the mean score of post-test in cycle II was 72.60. From the data of the mean score, the researcher found there were 8.75 % of improvement due to the treatment of cycle I. Meanwhile, 10.33 % improvement had occured after the treatment of cycle II. Hence, the accumulation improvement after the treatment of cycle I and cycle II was 8.75%+10.33% = 19.08%.
It can be concluded that the implementation of Snowball Throwing Technique can improve students’ reading comprehension achievement althoughthe researcher realizes that the mean score did not reach to the criteria of minimum score of the school.
