THE EFFECT OF APPLYINGMESSAGE SECRET GAME TOWARD THE EIGHTH GRADE STUDENTS’ VOCABULARY MASTERY (An Experimental Researchat SMP Negeri 2 Tonjong in the Academic Year of 2016/2017)

The objective of this research was to find out the effect of Applying Message Secret Gameon Students’Vocabulary Mastery of the Eighth GradeStudents ofSMP Negeri 2 Tonjong in the Academic Year of 2016/2017.
Based on the review of related literature, theoritical framework, the hypothesis is proposed as follows: there is a positive effect of applying Message Secret gameon Students’ Vocabulary Mastery of the Eighth Grade Students of SMP Negeri 2 Tonjong in the Academic Year of 2016/2017.
This research was experimental research. The population of this research was the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 2 Tonjong in the Academic Year of 2016/2017 which consisted of 231 students. In this research, the writer used 2 classes (VIII A and VIII C) which consisted of 34 students for each class as the sample of the research who are selected by using cluster random sampling technique. In designing study, the writer used Two-Group Design which consisted of two classes that hadthe same level, theywere class VIII C as experimental group and class VIII A as control group. The writer usedvocabulary test as the type of instrument of the research by using multiple choice design which consist of 40 items with four alternative a, b,c and d.
To analyzed the data, the writer used t-test formula to find out the difference of vocabulary mastery of the two groups. Based onthe result of data analysis, the score of t-table at 5% level of significances was 1,997while t-ratio was4,166. So, t-ratio was higher than t-table (4,166> 1,997). According to this calculation, the research hypothesis of this research was accepted. It means that there was significant difference on vocabularymasterybetween the students who were taught by applying Message Secret game and those who were not taught by applying Message Secret game.
The result of this research showed that applying Message Secret game had a positive effect on vocabulary mastery of the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 2 Tonjong in the academic year of 2016/2017.Play games was one of the effective and efficient ways to improve students’ ability. Teacher should be creative in using learning method or learning strategy because implementing the right method or strategy can reduce students’ stress and boredom.
