THE EFFECT OF “RIDDLES” ON STUDENTS’ VOCABULARY ACHIEVEMENT ( An Experimental Research to the Seventh Graders of SMP NU 01 Hasyim Asy’ari Tarub )

The objective of this research is to know the effect of the application of Riddles game toward the seventh-grade students’ vocabulary mastery. Riddles is a kind of word game.
The type of this research is experimental research with two group design and use pre-test and post-test. The population of this research is the seventh-grade students at SMP Nu 01 Hasyim Asy’ari Tarub in the academic year of 2016/2017. Cluster random sampling technique is used to take the samples. The total number of samples is 64 students. There are 32 students who are taught by the application of Riddles as an experimental group and 32 students who are taught by grammar translation method (GTM) as a control group.
The treatments were conducted 8 times for both experimental group and control group. To analyze the data t-test was used and the score of the t-test was 5,786. While the score of t-table at 5% significance on the degree of freedom of 62 was 1,999. Thus, t-count was higher than t-table (5,786 >1,999). Based on the result of data analysis, the null hypothesis was rejected and the alternative hypothesis was accepted. It can be concluded that the application of Riddles gave positive effect toward the seventh-grade students’ vocabulary Achievement at SMP NU 01 Hasyim Asy'ari Tarub in the academic year of 2016/2017.
Thus, the application of Riddles is recommended in teaching vocabulary because it can improve the students’ vocabulary mastery. The students’ interest and the students’ motivation are also improved in learning vocabulary by the application of Riddles.
